Old tractor models typically use a tractor starter and generator in their systems, but generators have their drawbacks. Upgrading your tractor’s power source to an alternator could save you time and money in the future. Below is a brief guide on the difference between the parts, why you should switch, and how to do so.

Generator vs. Alternator

The main difference between a generator and alternator is the method used to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. A generator uses a moving wire coil, or stator, in a magnetic field to generate power, while a tractor alternator rotates a magnet to produce the change in the magnetic field that creates a current.

Why Should I Do It?

Upgrading to an alternator is more affordable than getting another generator since it is an outdated system. Alternator parts are also readily available on the market, saving you time and money on future repairs. It’d also be an efficient change, as alternators are simple in design, can produce more energy than generators, and only produce the energy that’s needed, minimizing waste.

How to Make the Switch

alternatorIf it’s not already, you’ll have to convert your tractor’s system to a negative-ground system or the new part won’t work. The original charging system, which includes the generator and voltage regulator, will need to be removed. Pay attention to the wires and connections attached to it, as they’ll need to be rerouted or removed entirely for the new part.

Next, you’ll mount the new alternator, which may require different hardware and components to make it fit, such as longer bolts. The final step is attaching the connections and wires. Most models have three: the main power lug, the field line, and the sense line.
