Dentists place tooth fillings as part of a routine dental procedure used to address cavities. The process removes decay in the enamel and preserves the structure and strength of the natural tooth. While this treatment is common, you may be wondering what to expect if you’ve never had one before. Here are the simple steps that will take place during your appointment.

What Happens When You Get a Tooth Filling?

1. Numbing

To ensure a comfortable experience, the dentist will first administer a numbing agent to the area of work. Often, the local anesthetic Novocain® is used to block out any sensation during and shortly after the procedure.

2. Removal of Decay

Next, the dentist will use either a drill or laser to gently remove the decayed portion of the tooth. Removing all traces of decay ensures no lingering bacteria can spread throughout the enamel and further recesses of the tooth, such as the pulp.

3. Cleaning

4. Application of Filling Material

Next, the filling material will be applied to the small hole in the affected tooth. Composite resin, one of the most common dental fillings, is cured using a special light. The material is durable and closely resembles natural enamel when hardened.

5. Polishing

Finally, the dentist will finish and polish the filling. You may have to bite down several times to ensure the filling aligns with your natural bite, and some adjustments may be made.

Afterward, you’ll care for your tooth filling using the same oral hygiene practices as normal, including brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and going for routine exams and cleanings.
