Whether you’re on a softball team or it’s just a hobby, you know that proper hitting technique is integral to the game. Improving your technique at the plate is a smart way to challenge yourself and elevate your gameplay. If you were wondering how to do so, here are some changes you can employ.

Tips for Improving Your Softball Hitting Technique

1. Grip

How you hold the bat makes significant a difference in how you hit the ball. In softball, your grip on the bat should be in the fingers, not the palm. This approach helps the wrists stay loose and flexible, which helps generate more speed when you swing.

2. Stance

softballThere are three basic softball hitting stances: square, open, and closed. Each has its advantages, and you should try them all out to find what works best for you. In a square stance, both feet are equidistant from the plate. For this reason, it’s sometimes referred to as a parallel stance. It’s ideal for beginners, as it prepares them for a variety of pitches.

With an open stance, the front foot is further away from the plate than the back foot, which opens up the body to the pitcher. If you’ve had issues seeing the ball, try this stance. For a closed stance, the back foot is the one further from the plate, so that the body turns inward and closes you off from the pitcher. The most significant advantage of this stance is that it improves your chances of hitting into the opposite field.

3. Follow-Through

After making contact with the ball, the movement should follow through so that the arms are fully extended. Don’t release the grip until the hands are close to the front shoulder. If you let go too early, you’ll be cutting down your speed. For the most power, your swing should end with your weight on the front leg and your chin near your back shoulder.
