Gaps in your smile can impact the function of your teeth. Dental implants are an excellent solution because they look like natural teeth and can be cared for with brushing and flossing. If you’re planning on discussing this procedure with your dentist, here’s what you should know.

A Guide to Dental Implants

What are dental implants made from?

Implants are made from a few different components. A titanium or alloy metal rod serves as the tooth root. The artificial tooth is attached to the abutment on the top of the rod. The tooth is usually made from porcelain or ceramic, which can be dyed to match your existing tooth color.

How long do they last?

If you properly care for your dental implant, it can last for years. Proper care entails daily brushing and flossing to remove plaque and bacteria.

While the artificial tooth can’t decay, maintaining gum health is still important. You should also visit your dentist for regular exams to ensure the implant remains secure.

What benefits do they offer?

dental implantsAlong with being easy to care for, implants function just like your other teeth. You won’t need to avoid certain foods, which can sometimes be an issue when wearing dentures. Implants also stimulate underlying jaw bone tissue, which keeps it healthy.

How long does the process take?

Implant procedures may take two or more visits. For it to be a success, the metal rod must fully fuse with the bone. That’s why dentists usually wait a few weeks between the first part of the procedure and the second. If the jaw bone tissue is compromised, you may also need a bone graft to increase the stability of the implant.
