Charming and natural, wood is one of the most popular fence materials for a reason. Unfortunately, though, a wooden fence is vulnerable to dirt, mold, mildew, and wear and tear. That’s why you should include it in your spring cleaning and maintenance routine. Follow these three tips to ensure your fence shines the rest of the year.

3 Spring Cleaning & Maintenance Tips for Wooden Fences

1. Scrub & Power Wash

During the winter, dirt and grime likely built up on your fence. Since wood is porous, these substances can seep in over time. Remove them using a cleaning solution made with water and either white vinegar or bleach. For white vinegar, use a 1:1 vinegar-to-water ratio. For bleach, use a 1:5 bleach-to-water ratio. Scrub the solution on the fence using rags and power-wash it clean.

2. Seal the Wood

After you’ve scrubbed and power-washed your fence, let it dry for a day to prevent trapping moisture. Next, fill a garden sprayer with a polyurethane wood sealer and spray both sides of the fence. Don’t forget the crevices between each slat or the fence posts.

3. Repair Any Issues

Examine your fence for any damage that may have occurred during the winter. Common issues include cracked rails, splintered posts, and chipping or decaying wood. Call a fence repair specialist if you notice any problems; if they’re not fixed promptly, they may worsen over the summer and necessitate a more expensive solution.
