When you visit your gynecologist, they likely include a breast exam in your checkup. This procedure can detect lumps or other abnormalities indicative of breast cancer. You should also do routine self-exams at home—once per month, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Here’s how performing a self-exam benefits you.

Why Should You Do At-Home Breast Exams?

1. It's Easy

A self-exam is simple, painless, and quick. Strip down from the waist up and start with a visual exam, checking for changes in size, shape, or symmetry. Also, look for puckering, dimpling, or changes in the nipples. Next, do a manual exam. Press the pads of your fingers gently and methodically along the breast, including the sides and underside. Feel for lumps, bumps, or sensitivity.

2. It May Save Your Life

This scan can detect early-stage breast cancer. The earlier you catch such tumors, the higher the odds of effective treatment. Women who receive treatment while the cancer is still localized have a 99% five-year relative survival rate.

3. It’s Reassuring

A self-exam allows you to proactively seize control over your health. Checking in with your body and ensuring nothing is wrong allows you to rest easy mentally. You can also be reassured that if something does come up, you will get the prompt health care you need.
