Because so much of Colorado sits on the high plains, when ice forms in the sky, it doesn’t have time to melt before it hits the ground. This is why the Centennial State is just behind Texas when it comes to hailstorm-associated insurance claims for property and car repair. While you may not be able to prevent the storm itself, you can minimize your vehicle damage by knowing what to do if you get caught driving in one.

What to Do If You’re Driving in a Hailstorm

1. Pull Over

Pull over and park as soon as you can safely do so. Driving against the storm compounds the ice’s impact against your car.

If possible, park under an overpass or other protective overhead covering. However, avoid stopping under a tree; the tree may attract lightning or a weak branch may fall, increasing your danger.

2.  Angle Towards the Storm

If you must park the car in an exposed area, angle it so that the wind is coming at you from the front. This reduces the likelihood that your car repair team will need to replace your auto glass.

3. Take Cover

Stay inside your vehicle, since even small hail can be dangerous to an unprotected person. Even if you are parked in your driveway, it’s not worth the risk of getting out and exposing yourself in the time it would take to walk to your door.

Lie down and face away from the windows. Cover your head with a blanket, coat, or anything else you have on hand to protect yourself from possible debris.
