Moving can be stressful since it involves uprooting your life, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are three tips to make your experience less demanding on your wallet.

How to Save When Moving

1. Go to Local Businesses for Boxes & Supplies

You’ll need plenty of boxes to pack your belongings, and they can add up in cost. Save money by approaching your local businesses for boxes.

If you have wine or liquor bottles you need to move, ask a local alcohol vendor if they have boxes they were going to recycle. Check out a bookstore for heavy-duty boxes. If you have a big chain store nearby, like a Walmart or Target, offer to take shipping boxes off their hands.

Additionally, go to a dollar or thrift store for discounted scissors, tape, bubble wrap, and markers.

2. Use Household Items as Packing Materials

movingFor fragile items, you should still use proper materials like bubble wrap and packing tape. However, more durable belongings can be rolled in towels, sweaters, or blankets for the trip. Dish towels are especially suitable for snaking between mugs or cushioning dishes.

You can also make containers like suitcases, laundry hampers, or beach coolers pull double-duty by filling them with smaller items you need to move.

3. Downsize

Hosting a yard sale can help offset the cost of moving. You’ll not only bring in extra cash but also won’t have to pay for as many boxes or as many hours with your professional movers.

If a yard sale seems like too much trouble, try posting items you want to sell on Facebook Marketplace, NextDoor, or a similar free online service.

If all else fails, your local thrift store will be grateful for the donations.
