Hydraulic power systems are often used in trucks and other heavy machinery because they can produce great force. The pistons that make up this system to create mechanical energy move with the help of oil or another fluid. They require proper maintenance, however, to prevent potential industrial equipment or truck repair issues.

Top 3 Hydraulics Problems

1. High Fluid Temperatures

Hydraulic systems contain reservoirs that hold excess fluid while the system is in operation. When airflow into and out of this section is blocked, the system cannot dissipate heat properly.

If the temperature of the oil exceeds 180 degrees Fahrenheit, it will degrade quickly and become thicker. Seals can be damaged. Hardened oil deposits could also form in affected areas, leading to excess friction that will increase wear and tear on the affected components.

2. Air or Water Contamination

truck repairAir bubbles that contaminate the fluid cause loud knocking noises while the system is in use. This often occurs when extremely high temperatures cause the dissolved air that is naturally present in the fluid to separate into small bubbles. The formation of the air bubbles decreases the viscosity and thermal conductivity of the oil. Fluid performance subsequently declines, harming the efficiency of the hydraulic system.

Water contamination is usually the result of condensation buildup within the fluid reservoir. This can cause significant corrosion unless fluid changes and water draining occur regularly.

3. Leaks

Leaks can slow down the hydraulic system’s flow and operation. Leaks most often result from a burst external hose, but hard-to-detect leaks in the pump, actuators, or valves may also occur. Such leaks will cause the system’s pressure to drop, raising temperatures in the affected area. Temperature measurements and hydraulic flow tests are needed to identify the source of internal leaks.
