As a parent, you’re always looking for ways to support what your child is learning in school at home. An effective way to do this is to engage your child with fun learning activities. Learning math is an excellent opportunity, as kids may get frustrated when trying to tackle this topic through traditional problem-solving. Check out these helpful ways to make math more fun.

How to Help Your Preschooler Practice Math

1. Baking

Baking requires basic counting. Even a simple batch of chocolate chip cookies give little ones a chance to count chips. Kids can also begin to learn about fractions as they measure out a 1/2 cup of one ingredient or a 1/4 teaspoon of another.

2. Building

schoolColorful building blocks like Legos® let kids hone their motor skills while also learning math. Simply asking a question like how tall a tower is gives kids the chance to count how many bricks high their construction is.

3. Dice Games

Kids who can count up to six can play dice games. For example, have children roll the dice and then count out the number they roll using simple objects like stuffed animals. You can also combine dice and building. If a child rolls a three, they add three blocks to their contraption.

4. Exercise

Young bodies benefit from physical activity. Challenge your child's body and mind by combining math with exercise. Have them count out tasks like jumping jacks and pushups, for example.

5. Plan a Party

Seize the opportunity of an event—like your child’s upcoming birthday party—to practice math. Kids can count out party supplies to match their guest list. Create challenges out of chores. For example, while setting up, if a package of napkins holds five and your child has seven friends coming over, have them figure out how many extra they will need.
