Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas found in the ground and atmosphere and the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. While it quickly disperses in outdoor conditions, it often becomes trapped inside buildings after entering through cracks and holes in the foundation. Since it is inert, colorless, and odorless, radon testing is the only way to detect it.

How to Determine Whether You Need Radon Testing

Any home can have a radon problem, but it is recommended to have radon testing completed before buying or selling a home, especially in states known to have elevated levels.

Colorado, in particular, has one of the highest concentrations of radon due to the uranium content found in the Rocky Mountains and the high level of mining activity. When the uranium breaks down, radon is naturally released into the ground.

How Is Radon Found & Removed?

radon testingThe standard way to test for radon is with a charcoal test kit. It is placed in a low-lying area of the building, usually the basement or crawl space, and captures any radon radioactivity on a film that is then sent to a lab to be analyzed.

Newer testing methods act more like a smoke detector. They read the air and provide an instant reading. Short-term ones can be purchased and used for a single test. Colorado residents are advised to install long-term detectors in their homes to pinpoint issues as soon as they arise. Perform annual calibrations to ensure the unit is working correctly.

If testing reveals radon levels at or above four picocuries per liter, take action immediately to lower it to a safer level. Contact a qualified radon mitigation company to install a reduction system that is right for the size and design of your home.
