Every year since 1967, first-year students at the Yale School of Architecture have participated in the The Vlock First Year Building Project, which gives them the opportunity to design and build a structure as part of their graduate program. Not only does this project give students valuable hands-on experience, but it also results in a new home for a family in an economically depressed area. For over 10 years, The L. Suzio York Hill Companies, one of Meriden, Connecticut's most established crushed stone, asphalt and concrete supply companies, has donated all the concrete these students need to finish their project, and this year is no different.

The annual building project was founded by Charles W. Moore, head of the Department of Architecture in the late '60s. He understood that getting architectural students out of the studio and into the field would lead to inspiration based on the mechanics of building, and give them a better understanding of how their designs would be used. As student populations became more socially aware, he also thought the project would create an opportunity for students to contribute back to society.

Over the years, the scale and intent of the projects have changed. Originally, students built community centers in Appalachia and other areas outside of New Haven, then contributed to building parks within the city itself. Recently, the school has turned its focus to providing affordable housing through partnerships with Habitat for Humanity and other non- profit builders.
