Like your windshield, your door window could get damaged by gravel kicked up by other vehicles on the road, flying debris, vandalism, accidents, or even extreme temperature changes. You could pay professionals to fix the damage, but that could be costly. An inexpensive alternative is to find the car door window from salvage yards that sell auto parts and change it on your own.

How to Change Your Car Door Window

1. Remove the Auto Glass

Remove the plastic panels using a flathead screwdriver first. Doing so will expose the screws that hold the door panel. Check your service manual to locate screwheads that are difficult to spot and unscrew them.

Auto parts like cranks and handles for manual transmission vehicles may also have to be unscrewed before you can pull up the old door panel using a flathead or a trim removal toolset.

Then, remove the vapor barrier and the nuts to pull up the old glass. If there are shattered glass pieces, carefully clear them out to avoid obstructions that may lead to improper installation.

2. Install the New Window

When installing glass auto parts, like a windshield or door window, it’s best to wear gloves, as breakage is possible. Line up the screws to connect the window and the regulator before securing the window using a wrench.

3. Test for Its Security

Test if you can adjust the window first. If not, inspect and adjust the screws until you can lower and raise the glass. Replace all the hardware, including the weather seal, air barrier, door trim, and the cranks and handles.

Connect the door panel once again and place back all the screws and plastic panels. Check if the glass is secured by tapping it.
