When you install a swimming pool, you can enjoy cool relief under the sun for years. To make the most of your investment, you must keep the water clean. Apart from skimming, vacuuming, and treating the water with the proper chemicals, you must install a reliable swimming pool filter to remove contaminants, including hair, dirt, and insects. Here’s a quick overview of the most common devices to help you find the right one for your needs.

A Guide to the Main Types of Swimming Pool Filters

1. Sand

swimming pool filterThis is one of the most common and affordable options. It consists of a tank that is filled about three-quarters of the way with a special type of sand. As water passes through the tank, the sand catches debris. When the tank fills up with particles, you must have it backwashed to remove contaminants and cleanse the sand.

This system is relatively low-maintenance. The tank filler only needs to be replaced every five years. However, this filter may not catch very fine particles. You can, however, improve the filtration by using alternative products, such as silica or filter glass.

2. Cartridge

This swimming pool filter contains one or more cartridges filled with polyester fibers. When water goes through the device, the fibers remove dirt and small particles.

This is typically more expensive than a sand filter, but also more effective at removing tiny debris. It lasts about eight years before it requires replacement. Keep in mind that about three times a year, you must have the unit disassembled to clean the cartridges. Your pool contractor may also use a special degreasing cleaner annually to remove oil buildup within the device.

3. Diatomaceous Earth

Also known as the DE filter, this option is somewhat similar in design to the sand-based system. However, it contains a series of long rods that hold finely crushed seashell materials.

The DE swimming pool filter is the most effective at removing small particles and keeping water clear. It comes at the highest upfront investment and must be regularly maintained with backwashing and replacements.
