All boats are fun for recreational use, but their engines can vary. For example, you might prefer an outboard motor that attaches to the vessel’s exterior and moves it via the combined efforts of a gearbox, engine, and propeller or jet drive. This is distinct from an inboard motor, which performs the same function from inside the hull. If you’re not convinced that an outboard motor is what you want, consider the following advantages.

Why Get a Boat With an Outboard Engine?

1. Specific Design

Outboard motors are tailored especially for boats. On top of propelling vessels forward, they help to steer them smoothly. Inboard motors more closely resemble automobile engines, which are not designed to incorporate steering.

Also, since outboard motors are placed on the transom, they allow more space for passengers and storage. By contrast, building a hull large enough to accommodate an inboard motor makes the boat smaller.

2. Convenience

boatsBecause they’re lighter than inboard motors, outboard motors boast reasonable power-to-weight ratios and are more efficient at using fuel.

Also, if you love to fish, an outboard motor makes it easier to access shallow water; the boat floats higher on the surface. They can even be adjusted or removed so that you don’t get stuck or run aground.

3. Easy Maintenance

Since outboard motors affix to the exteriors of boats, and can even be lifted off, they’re quick and easy to access if you need to fix them. In general, however, they need little maintenance and don’t require winterization.

Inboard motors are not built to handle moisture well, making them more prone to damage. It’s also difficult to reach into hulls to make repairs. In preparation for winter, inboards need to have their fluids and filters changed or replenished.

4. Upgrades

Although outboard motors have reputations for being noisy, recent technological developments have resulted in quieter and more efficient motors. If you want to upgrade, all you have to do is remove your old one and attach the new one.

Replacing an inboard engine is more challenging and expensive because it requires going inside the hull and carefully extracting the old model before installing a new one.
