Due to the year-round warm weather in Hawaii, fleas and ticks are a constant problem for pets. As their caretaker, your best recourse to protect them is to focus on prevention. Here are a few useful tips you can implement around your home to keep these pests away.

How to Fend Off Ticks & Fleas

1. Apply a Yard Treatment

To safeguard your pets and home from fleas and ticks, remove these pests from your lawn. Apply a spray treatment or fogger over your entire outdoor area, including any lawn furniture, to kill any current fleas and ticks living in the grass and repel others for several months.

2.  Keep a Tidy Home

petsA dirty home makes it much easier for fleas and ticks to invade and multiply. In addition to your pets, these pests tend to live on furniture, carpeting, drapes, and bedding. Keeping these areas clean will help reduce their numbers and make it easier to see any future bugs moving about.

Vacuum multiple times a week to remove any flea eggs laid in carpet and furniture fibers. Also, wash all bedding, including pet beds, in hot water at least once a week.

3. Buy a Dehumidifier

Both fleas and ticks thrive in high humidity conditions. Use one or more dehumidifiers to lower the humidity in your home to below 50%. This will cause any present fleas or ticks and their larvae to shrivel and dry up within a few hours.
