If you’re unhappy with the current shade of your smile, teeth whitening is a great cosmetic option. The whitening process is simple but produces dazzling results for a bright smile and improved confidence. If you’re unsure what happens during this procedure, the information below outlines what to expect.

4 Step Teeth Whitening Process

Step 1: Consultation

The consultation serves two purposes. First, your dentist will determine if you’re a good candidate for a whitening procedure. Some dental stains can’t be removed through whitening, such as deep-set stains or discoloration caused by degraded enamel.

If you’re deemed a good candidate, you’ll need to determine the desired shade of your teeth. Some people only want a subtle improvement to ensure their smile remains natural looking. Your dentist will show you different shades and allow you to weigh your options.

Step 2: Teeth Cleaning

Step 3: Whitening Application

Finally, the whitening solution will be applied to your teeth. Some dentists use a dental tray, while others paint the solution directly onto your teeth. The solution will be mixed according to your shade preference to lighten your teeth.

Step 4: Activation

Once the solution is applied, your dentist may also use a dental bleaching light. This is to speed up curing time and activate the bleaching solution for a brighter smile. In general, the entire process usually takes anywhere between an hour to 90 minutes to complete, depending on the severity of the stains and how bright you prefer your teeth.
