Unless you get a fresh lock installed, you can never know who else has a copy of the key. However, if you don’t want to replace the lock entirely, you can rekey it for the same sense of security. If you want to know more about how this locksmith service keeps your home safe, read the following guide.

How It’s Done

Inside most standard locks is a cylinder that contains a pin and tumbler system. When the matching key is inserted, it moves the pins into the proper position to unlock the door. If the cylinder is compromised, or if you want to reengineer the lock, a locksmith will replace this during the rekeying process.

The locksmith will first unscrew the doorknob so they can access the lock cylinder. They will then draw this cylinder from the retainer ring and remove the plug that holds the lock pins.

The locksmith will insert the new key and pair the new lock pins with the teeth. Finally, they’ll replace the cylinder and reassemble the doorknob.

Why It’s Important

rekeyA rekeying service is often used after a break-in and when homeowners suspect the burglar has access to the property. It may also be used when you move into a new home or if a roommate or ex moves out. Whatever the reason, this measure ensures no one can use an existing key to enter your home.

There are some cases when you should replace the lock instead. A damaged lock may not be able to be rekeyed. Also, the rekeying process can’t strengthen a door, so you may want to upgrade to a stronger lock if you have concerns about forced-entry break-ins.
