Whether you drive a pickup truck or sleek sedan, your vehicle may eventually need brake service. The way the car responds when you attempt to slow down or stop lets you know when it’s time to replace the pads or repair other components. To stay safe on the road, watch out for the following issues.

How Can You Know When You Need Brake Service?

1. Clicking Sounds

The brake pads prevent excessive friction between metal components, protecting them from overheating. Depending on the vehicle, they are held in place with pins, bolts, or clips.

If these loosen, the pads wobble during operation and produce clicking sounds when you press the brake pedal. This can also affect steering, making the car pull to the side.

2. Vibrations

If you feel the brake pedal shake when you press it, the resin that holds the pads together might be unevenly worn.

Called glazing, this often happens when the resin melts unevenly, reducing friction against the rotor. These pads may need replacement to ensure the brakes are reliable.

3. Smoke

The car’s wheels may produce smoke if the brake caliper is stuck. This can happen if the brake pads are overly worn, the grooves in the caliper are dirty, or the rubber holding the bolts is torn.

4. Unusual Smells

When the brakes overheat because of excessive friction, you may notice a harsh chemical odor when you drive or press the pedal, especially on steep hills. This can also happen if you don’t fully release the parking brake before driving.

If this occurs while the parking brake is not engaged, find a safe place to stop and let the brakes cool down. This prevents total brake failure, which occurs when the fluid boils due to overheating.
