If you’re new to boating in Alaska, take the time to learn the state’s regulations. Before you can head out, you might need to register your new or used boat. This guide will help you understand how the state’s boating laws apply to you.

Which Boats Do & Don’t Need to Be Registered?

Register any new or used boats before sailing through state waters, including streams, lakes, oceans, and rivers. Vessels that are registered with another municipality can legally sail in Alaska for up to 90 days.

The majority of powered boats must be registered, including nonpowered vessels that have secondary motors. Any boat used by a sport fishing guide must also be registered.

Equipment that isn’t motorized is exempt. This includes lifeboats, seaplanes, and water sport toys. Boats meant for government use are also exempt.

What’s Involved in Registering a Boat?

Used BoatYou have to register your unit with the Alaskan Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) every three years. This involves completing and submitting form B1 with proof of ownership. Proof of ownership includes the original manufacturer’s certificate or statement of origin, a U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation, a bill of sale, or an affidavit of ownership. The DMV also accepts a copy of the registration issued by  another state.

Registration fees apply. For a powered boat, or a nonpowered unit with an auxiliary motor, the fee is $25. The fee is $10 for nonpowered vessels.

How Is Renewing Your Boat Registration Different?

You must get a renewal notice before the expiration date on your boat or yacht registration. For this reason, it’s important to file a change of address with the DMV as soon as you move.

The registration renewal must be completed before the end of the month of your original registration date. If you have a credit or debit card and the registration renewal number, you can do this online. The same registration fees apply.
