When you flip the switch and turn your furnace off, you want to ensure it stays in good condition during Spring and Summer. Shutting down your furnace properly ensures that it is well maintained and ready to operate effectively during the cool temperatures of Fall. Follow these tips to care for your residential heating system during warmer months.

Furnace Care Tips for Spring and Summer

1. Clean the Unit

During the winter months, your furnace worked hard to keep your home warm and comfortable. Dust, dirt, and buildup have probably accumulated on the unit in the winter. Wipe the exterior of the unit down to eliminate this buildup. Sweep around the furnace to eliminate any debris that could become a fire hazard.

Make sure that no objects are placed next to the unit so that airflow is unobstructed next season. Then, change the air filter, which is also probably dirty after a season of running. By replacing the air filter now, you can ensure your residential heating unit is ready to operate next season.

2. Check Your Registers

As you’re shutting down your furnace and preparing it for the offseason, check the registers to eliminate any dust that has accumulated on them. This will avoid the dust blowing around your home and reducing your air quality. If you have ceiling registers, you may need a ladder or a duster with a long handle to clean them.

3. Carbon Monoxide Detector

Your carbon monoxide detector is a simple, life-saving device that is often attached to your smoke alarm. When your furnace is operating, the carbon monoxide detector is especially important because it can detect this invisible, toxic gas and alert you immediately. Make sure that this detector is ready to operate next season by checking its batteries when you’re shutting down your furnace.
