Losing a loved one is difficult for anyone, but it can be especially tough for children. That’s why many parents question if their children should attend funeral services or not. If you’re having trouble deciding whether to allow your child to go to a funeral, the following guide may be helpful.

How to Decide if Your Child Should Go to a Funeral

Child’s Age

In most cases, infants and toddlers are too young to bring to funerals. They need constant attention and care and may distract other attendees.

Preschool-aged children, for the most part, can entertain themselves and shouldn’t cause much of a disturbance during funeral services. Remember to bring coloring books, toys, or snacks to keep them occupied.

Once children reach the elementary school years, they likely understand what death is and are capable of behaving at a funeral.

Willingness to Attend

funeral serviceChildren should be able to choose whether they attend a funeral or not. After you explain the purpose and expectations of a funeral service, ask your child if they would like to attend it. If your child doesn’t feel comfortable attending, don’t force them.

Relationship to the Deceased

It’s also important to consider how close the child was with the deceased. If the deceased person was the child’s parent, sibling, or another close relative, it’s necessary for the child to attend. On the other hand, if the deceased was a distant relative or family friend they didn’t know well, there’s no reason for them to attend.

Are There Any Parts of a Funeral Children May Skip?

If you believe your child is mature enough to handle a funeral, allow them to attend the service at the funeral home or church. However, the burial portion may be too traumatic for children of all ages.
