When you invest in new hardwood floors, you must take a few precautionary steps to prolong their lifespan. Unfortunately, the wear and tear of everyday life can sometimes take a toll on their finish. Luckily, by following the steps below, you can prevent scratches and wear without too much extra effort.

How to Prevent Scratches on Hardwood Flooring

1. Use Furniture Pads

Attach felt pads to furniture legs, especially pieces that are moved regularly, such as dining chairs. This prevents their feet from damaging new hardwood floors.

You can find pads in a variety of sizes at most home improvement stores. Some options are backed by adhesives, while others slip on or attach with hardware. Apply pads to stationary pieces as well to prevent marks over time.

2. Lift Belongings

Dragging furniture across floors often leaves marks on the finish. When moving items, lift them and carry them to their new spots. If the piece is too heavy, ask for help.

These rules apply to chairs at the dining or kitchen table, too. Remind your family to lift chairs, not drag them, when they take seats or leave.

3. Get Area Rugs

Glue rubber pads underneath them to keep them in place.

4. Clean

In general, keeping your flooring clean maintains the finish. Dirt and debris can also adhere to furniture legs and pads, causing scratches when you move the pieces.

Sweep at least once a week. If you use a mop and oil-based supplies, carefully follow the instructions on product labels to prevent stains.
