Here are the “personal gear” items you should have when you show up for your first pool session.

What Scuba Gear to Bring When Diving

1. Mask

Avoid fit problems by supplying your own mask. It should fit comfortably on your face and create a good seal. This prevents water leaks that can irritate your eyes and create vision issues. Having your own mask also keeps you from using previously used equipment that may harbor bacteria or feature other cleanliness issues such as makeup, sweat, and facial oil.

2. Fins

scubaPurchase your own fins.  Fin sizes go from x-small to extra large and all the manufacturers sizing varies just a bit. Most men with a size 9-10 shoe will likely wear a size large and women shoe size 7-9 wear a small. This is not set in stone so it is best to go to your local scuba dive center and “try on” fins before you make that purchase. The scuba professionals can tell you about the features and benefits of many different fin styles. This way you can make a educated purchase a get the right fins the first time with no guess work. Perform the “shake test” to make sure that the fins won’t fall off when in the water. Fins that do not fit correctly can make for a very unpleasant dive experience.

3. Booties

Invest in quality scuba booties. The accessories protect your feet from blisters, cuts, and abrasions, all of which can occur in the water or on dry land. Booties also shield feet from scorching sand and dive decks, keep feet warm in cold water, and ensure the correct fit for open-heeled flippers.

You really need your own snorkel because it allows for proper fit when diving. It also have less wear and tear on your gear, keeping it in good condition and making it less likely to need to be replace frequently.
