As the parent of any athlete will tell you, there’s nothing quite like the pride that comes from watching your child work hard at their favorite sport.  At the same time, it’s difficult to see your child struggle, and hard to resist the temptation to “fix it” for them. Your job as a gymnastics parent is to offer support and encouragement to help your child reach their goals. It’s easy to do that when you keep these tips in mind. 

How to Help Your Child Succeed in Gymnastics

1. Set the Stage for Success

One of the best ways to support your athlete is to create an environment where they have what they need to be successful. This includes ensuring they eat healthily, drink lots of water, and get plenty of rest.

It also means paying close attention to your athlete’s emotional state, and getting help if you notice any issues, such as increased anxiety or stress. Even a simple act like getting them to practice on time helps them feel supported and ready to achieve their goals. 

2. Work With the Coach

gymnasticsYour child’s coach is well-versed in the sport of gymnastics and has the training to help your child develop the proper techniques. They know how to help athletes develop their skills without injury. Therefore, it’s best to let the coach do their job.

Check in with them every so often to discuss your child’s progress and ask how you can support their development outside the gym. Repeat any guidance or advice the coach offers at home to reinforce their lessons. 

3. Offer Praise & Encouragement 

One of your most important jobs as a parent is to serve as a cheerleader for your child. Encouraging words, even just acknowledging how hard they are working, can go a long way toward boosting your gymnast’s confidence. When they reach goals, no matter how small, celebrate with them. They might not show it, but deep down they appreciate having you in their corner.
