As people around the world cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, you might have to postpone your wedding because of it. If so, you’re like thousands of couples addressing similar situations. Here are a few tips for rescheduling the special occasion with minimal problems and expenses.

What to Do if COVID-19 Forces You to Postpone Your Wedding

1. Gather Contact Information

Put together lists of email addresses and phone numbers for all the vendors, helpers, party members, and invitees involved. If you’re working with a wedding planner, ask for their assistance. Experienced planners know how to handle postponements and might help you minimize costs, such as forfeited deposits or rescheduling fees.

2. Stop Special Orders

weddingsIf you’ve ordered invitations, flowers, personalized items, a cake, and booked a photographer, contact the vendors and put them on hold. Let them know you aren’t canceling and that you’ll provide a new date as soon as you can. Read your contracts and prepare to negotiate.

3. Contact Your Wedding Venues

Communicate with your contacts for the wedding and reception venues and find out if they have alternate dates available that fit your schedule. Being flexible (considering off-peak times or alternative locations) increases your chances of getting a new date sooner. Remember, other people are rescheduling, too.

4. Talk to Wedding Party Members & Invitees

Tell your party members about the changes and see whether they’re available for the new date. Email or call invitees about the changes. Hopefully, everyone can still participate and attend, but it’s possible that they can’t.

5. Celebrate Your Original Wedding Day

Plan something special with your future spouse to celebrate the original day. Even if you’re in a separate location from your loved one, today’s technology offers lots of ways to connect that might help you maintain a positive attitude.
