No matter how well-trained a pet is, accidents sometimes happen. Mud and waste can take a toll on your carpet if you don’t act immediately. This carpet cleaning guide covers how to react as soon as you notice different types of materials on your flooring.

How to Remove Pet Urine Stains & Odors

Ideally, you should clean this up right away. If the liquid dries, the odor can set into the carpet fibers.

First, use a towel to blot and absorb as much liquid as possible. Then, pour a small amount of a two-part white vinegar and one-part water solution on the stain and sprinkle baking soda on top. Allow this mixture to sit for five to 10 minutes. The chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda lifts stains before they develop.

Afterward, remove as much baking soda as possible from the surface, allow it to dry completely, then vacuum to remove all residue.

How to Remove Dirt Marks

Once the spot feels dry to the touch, vacuum the stain to lift as much debris as possible. To remove pieces trapped in the carpet, blot a mixture of dish detergent and water over the stain until the dirt disappears. Switch towels as needed, and dry the area thoroughly afterward.

How to Deal With Hairballs & Pet Vomit

The high acid content of the stomach can stain a carpet quickly, so wipe these accidents as soon as you find them.

Use a dustpan and scraper to remove any debris, and blot the mark with a towel to soak up the moisture. Make a solution of 2 cups of warm water, ½ a cup of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of dish detergent. Apply the mixture with a sponge and blot lightly. You may also use a soft-bristled brush to scrub gently as needed. Use a towel to dry the remaining moisture once the stain is gone.
