As you plan spring-cleaning projects, don’t forget to inspect and tend to your garage door to ensure efficiency and extend the lifespan of the machinery. Here’s a handy maintenance checklist to keep the mechanism in optimal condition and reduce the need for emergency repairs.

How to Extend the Life of Your Garage Door

1. Tighten Hardware

When you open and close the garage several times a day, the constant action and vibration can loosen the hardware. Using a socket wrench, tighten nuts and bolts on your hinges,  to reduce friction between components.

2. Lubricate Parts

When opening and closing the door, grinding sounds indicate dry pieces and rubbing metal. To ensure efficiency, take a few minutes to lubricate metal parts.

3. Inspect Rollers

Rollers are made of either nylon or steel and ride along your door track to open and close the garage door. They typically need to be replaced every seven years based on your usage.

Inspect your rollers twice a year and check for chips, cracks, and general wear and tear. If you notice worn-out or wobbly rollers, have a garage door technician replace these components so your garage door system stays in working order.

4. Replace Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping insulates and seals your interior so your vehicle and stored belongings are protected from the elements. When weatherstripping is cracked and brittle, replace it to ensure a proper seal and avoid water damage. Replacing your weatherstripping can be a DIY project easily taken care of during your spring cleaning this year.
