When you’re expecting, taking care of your body through every trimester is always a priority. This should include an on-going commitment to oral health. If you’re pregnant, here are a few dental tips your dentist wants you to embrace.

How to Care for Your Teeth When Pregnant

1. Combat Gum Disease

Due to hormonal changes, pregnant women are at a higher risk of gum inflammation or gum disease. Periodontal diseases during pregnancy can lead to low birth weight and other health issues for your newborn.

Pregnant women should embrace a healthy oral hygiene routine that includes brushing and flossing twice a day. Using a natural mouthwash can also help reduce plaque buildup and protect against gum disease.

2. Mediate Morning Sickness

Many pregnant women experience bouts of morning sickness, particularly during the first and second trimesters. Vomiting can lead to an influx of stomach acid in the mouth, which can wear down your enamel.

To reduce exposure, rinse your mouth with water mixed with a teaspoon of baking soda immediately after an episode. Wait approximately 30 minutes before brushing with toothpaste so the acid is sufficiently neutralized and you won’t impact enamel through the cleaning process.

3. Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a didentistet that’s rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins will ensure you and your growing baby are getting the right vitamins and nutrients. A balanced diet can maintain immunity, fight infection, and keep your body strong.

Also, by limiting sugar intake and managing pregnancy cravings, you’ll reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems.

4. Visit Your Dentist

While cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening do not necessarily need to be performed during this time, visiting your dentist when pregnant and maintaining a close relationship is highly recommended. Professional teeth cleanings can reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and the need for root canals and other extensive procedures.

Your dentist can also help you mediate oral health issues such as pregnancy tumors along the gum line.
