Deck

Like patios, decks are open-air porches or platforms; however, they are an extension of the outside of the house—not separated from it. They are usually made from vinyl or wood, including cedar, pine, or redwood species. These structures are designed for viewing the outdoor scenery or landscape, and they can have multiple levels as well as railings. Some municipalities require a construction permit to build a deck, which means homeowners must check local zoning laws before starting the building process. Once the permits are provided, your deck may need several inspections while it’s being built to ensure it’s up to code.

Though decks often require power washing and sealing every few years to remain attractive and in good condition, they are desirable to homebuyers, which increases the property value. With proper upkeep, pressure treated wood decks can last up to 15 years, while composite decking—made from wood shavings and plastic—have a lifespan of 25 years. Wooden decks can also be customized with paints or stains to match the house.
