Air conditioning systems are powerful and complex. When you understand your system, you’re able to manage your air conditioning repair and maintenance needs properly. Here are some of the most important components you should be aware of.

Which AC Components Do You Need to Know?

Most air conditioning systems have an indoor blower unit and an outdoor unit known as the compressor. The entire system is powered by Freon®, which is commonly called refrigerant. Then, the refrigerant absorbs heat from indoors and releases it outside through the system’s condenser coils. Your outdoor compressor is responsible for pressurizing and circulating the refrigerant.

Inside, the evaporator coils cool off the refrigerant, allowing it to absorb heat from within the house. The air in this area becomes cool, at which point the indoor fan blows the cool air through the ducts to reach the rest of the house. This process goes on continuously while the system is in operation.

Common Air Conditioning Repair Issues

Refrigerant leaks are a relatively common problem, as over time, the metal containing the Freon will experience formaldehyde corrosion. This creates small holes that allow the refrigerant to escape, and will cause your system to no longer be able to cool efficiently.

Trouble with the compressor or indoor fan’s blower motor will prevent air from circulating through the house, even if the rest of the system is functionally sound. A non-functioning compressor won’t be able to send refrigerant inside to remove heat. Additionally, a broken blower motor will keep the fan from blowing cooled air through the ducts.

Even seemingly minor issues, like a clogged air filter, could increase wear and tear on the system and accelerate these problems. A clogged filter forces your system to work harder to draw in air, which is why HVAC filters should be replaced every three months. It’s also recommended that you schedule an annual tuneup so a professional technician can check for any potential problems and fix them before they get out of hand.
