If a dentist determines you have gingivitis, you must take steps to prevent the condition from developing into advanced gum disease. Luckily, by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily, you remove accumulated plaque and restore your oral health. You can also take additional steps to minimize the side effects of bacteria accumulation. While you should consult your dentist to determine which methods are right for you, here are a few popular ways to remove more plaque when you have gingivitis.

What to Do If You Have Gingivitis

1. Rinse With Saltwater

Salt helps heal the gums and remove bacteria.

Mix 1/2 a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water, then swish the solution in your mouth for around 30 seconds. Repeat each time you brush your teeth, but no more than three times a day. Quit the practice after your dentist determines your gums are healthy since saltwater weakens enamel.

2. Make a Homemade Mouthwash

dentistAloe vera juice, which has been shown to fight gingivitis, acts as an all-natural mouthwash.

Choose a product that’s 100% aloe juice, avoiding options with additives and sugar. These beverages are available in most health food stores. Swish the juice in your mouth for about 30 seconds, then spit it out. Try this before brushing your teeth.

3. Try Oil-Pulling

Coconut oil helps eliminate bacteria and swelling, and research has shown it fights plaque and gingivitis

Let the oil reach room temperature, then swish 1 to 2 tablespoons of the liquified product in your mouth for 15 to 30 minutes. Try not to swallow the oil since it may contain food debris and bacteria.
