Spring is a wonderful time of year: weather warms up, days get longer, and flowers start to bloom. But all these changes mean that pests come out of hiding to build their nests, forage for food, and procreate. Be proactive about your pest control this spring by knowing what types of critters to avoid and how to keep them at bay.

A Pest Control Guide for Spring

1. Ants

As the weather gets warmer, ants emerge looking for shelter and food. Carpenter ants–a common issue in the Ozarks region–can inflict damage to your home as they build their colonies inside your walls. They can enter the house through the foundation or ventilation system, pipes, cracks around windows and doors, and along telephone lines. Spraying for insects around the perimeter of your property will keep them out.

2. Rats & Mice

Ratswest plains pest control and mice start breeding around April each spring. They will chew through anything, causing damage to a home or building’s wiring and electric. They’re nimble, being able to squeeze through spaces as small as the size of a quarter. Inspect your home’s exterior for holes or points of access and cover openings with thick wire mesh. Keep your food in plastic, sealable containers and cover your garbage cans to eliminate their food source.

3. Termites

Termites swarm each spring, leaving their nests to start their own colonies. They may be drawn to the wood in and around your home. Termites are extremely destructive and will eat their way through the structure of your home, compromising its integrity. Move any woodpiles further away from your home and make sure there are at least four inches between your mulching and the foundation of your house. Turn off your outdoor lights at night to keep them from swarming.
