Many people schedule optometrist appointments because they’re concerned about a growing lump in their eyelids. If this sounds familiar, you may have a chalazion. Here is some information about the condition to maintain eye health and protect your vision.

The Condition

Chalazia are blocked oil glands in the eyelid called meibomian, where the eyelash meets the sweat glands. These lumps can grow to be pea-sized and may be painful and red or painless and swollen.

Some people develop chalazia on the upper or lower eyelids when styes near the surface go untreated. Chalazia may go away on their own, but some require professional treatment to prevent the swelling from interrupting your vision.

Risk Factors

Individuals who have rosacea or chronic eyelid inflammation are more likely to have chalazia because their skin is more vulnerable to infections. People with viral infections or tuberculosis are also at heightened risk.

Diagnosis

optometrist Fayette County KYIf you suspect you have a chalazion, contact an optometrist. They will inspect the eyelid and investigate the symptoms to assess whether the lump is a stye or a chalazion. They’ll recommend a treatment solution, like some at-home remedies to try, or to call back if the issue continues after a few weeks.

Treatments

Many people reduce pain and swelling by applying washcloths with warm water to the eyelid area for 15-minute intervals throughout the day. Wash your hands and then gently massage the lumpy area to encourage the blockage to break up and allow the oils to drain.

Don’t touch your eyes to avoid worsening a chalazion by introducing bacteria to the region. Never try to squeeze or pop these bumps as you may injure the eyelid.

Return to the optometrist if the problem hasn’t gone away within a month. They may have to drain the area to restore the lid and ensure you can see normally without the obstruction.
