While winter causes vehicle problems such as low tire pressure and thickened motor oil, summer can also create a variety of car issues. Use the coming weeks to prepare your car for summer with help from your auto repair shop. Below, review some of the most common warm weather problems to keep up with car maintenance during the hottest days of the year.

4 Summertime Vehicle Issues

1. Tire Blowouts

Unlike cold weather that causes air pressure within your tires to drop and become deflated, hot weather makes the air expand. The increase in tire pressure puts the rubber at risk for blowouts that can cause serious safety issues when you’re behind the wheel. Check the tire pressure regularly during summer to decrease your blowout risk, especially during hot spells.

2. Faulty Air Conditioning

Get your air conditioning system inspected by auto repair experts during late spring to repair any problems that cause the part to blow warm air or no air when the weather is scorching.

3. Dead Battery

Winter temperatures may drain car battery life, but summer heat increases corrosion and makes the part work extra hard to power your car. Inspect your battery for rust deposits and check the plastic pieces to help the part stay cool. Also, keep your vehicle parked in a garage or under a carport to protect it from the sun. If your battery is older, consider replacing it before the temperatures increase.

4. Evaporative Leaks

High temperatures turn liquid fuel into vapor, which puts more pressure on the tank and the connecting fuel lines. If the lines cracked over winter, fuel vapor can escape during summer and lower fuel economy. Fuel vapor leaks are among the reasons for ‘Check Engine’ light illumination, so take your vehicle for auto repairs if the light comes on, in addition to keeping it out of extreme heat whenever possible.
