Whether you’ve just moved into a home with outdated fixtures or are looking for a change of scenery, a kitchen remodeling project can transform everyday life for the better. Before you dive into the details, however, you’ll have to settle on an overall layout for the design.

What Are Possible Layout Options for Your Kitchen?

1. L-Shape

For homes with medium-sized kitchens, the most classic layout forms an “L.” In this formation, countertops line both legs of the L, filling two walls.

Depending on the size of the room, you could use the space inside the right angle for a small breakfast table. You could also leave it open for quick trips between appliances or to the pantry.

2. Horseshoe

Ideally, you should have one major workspace — the refrigerator, stove, or sink — on each leg of the U so that traffic forms a triangle around the room. If you have multiple people working in the kitchen at once, this will prevent you from bumping into one another.

3. Island

If you’re planning kitchen remodeling in a larger living space, an island adds a functional focal point to the room. While the outer perimeter of the kitchen might form a U or L, you can fill the spacious inner section with an isolated counter.

Since it doesn’t connect to any peripheral countertops, the island allows for convenient traffic throughout the kitchen. It will also encourage your family to spend more time in the room, whether they’re enjoying hors d'oeuvres, chopping vegetables, or just keeping you company.
