Although lawn equipment is a wise investment that pays for itself over time, it’s expensive when bought new. Fortunately, you can often find what you need at a pawnshop and save a lot of that upfront money. Whenever buying used products, though, it’s important to make sure you’re getting the best possible deal for both present and future use.

How to Shop for Lawn Equipment at a Pawnshop

1. Look for Flaws & Damage

Before buying a piece of lawn equipment, examine it for signs of wear and tear. A couple of small dents probably won’t matter, but it should still be functional and safe.

For example, a mower should have a switch for turning off the blades. Don’t take a mower home without this feature, even if everything else seems fine. The same is true of other tools; if you can’t see yourself comfortably and safely using them, think twice.

2. Focus on Size & Configuration

If you have a large property or intensive landscaping needs, invest in bigger, faster, and more efficient pieces of equipment with minimal damage, even if they’re a year or two older than other available options.

For example, if your yard is more than 3/4 of an acre, you’d likely prefer to mow it quickly and without exhausting yourself in the summer heat. In that case, a riding mower is probably more useful than a brand-new walk-behind model.

3. Get a Fair Price

While you’re at the shop, take a moment with your smartphone to look up a piece of equipment online and find out the full retail price. Luckily, a quick online search should give you an idea of the range you’re looking for.

The advantage of buying equipment from a pawn shop is that it’s cheaper, of course, but you should still make sure you’re getting a good deal. Most tools that are two or three years old aren’t worth more than 60% or 70% of their retail price when they’re in good condition. If the tool you want has a bigger price tag than that, see if you can negotiate with the pawnbroker.
