Few foods have the same worldwide appeal as burgers do. Tasty, filling, convenient, and popular among all ages and classes of people, this humble sandwich has a long and colorful history despite being only about a century old. It comes in a wide array of styles with nearly unlimited variations and toppings. No matter how you like your hamburger, they all have a common origin. Here’s how it all began.

Burgers From Past to Present

Beginnings in Hamburg

Minced meat dishes have been popular in many cultures throughout history, but the origin of the name of this sandwich comes from the German port city of Hamburg. It’s been suggested that Russian ground meat recipes were brought to the city before merchants and German emigrants carried them around the world in the 1840s. In North America, the name “Hamburger” would link the sandwich forever to the city in which it may have originated.

The True Hamburger is Born

burgersThe Hamburg steak, similar to Salisbury steak, became popular in New York restaurants in the late 1800s. Many people claim to have invented the sandwich between 1884 and 1904.

One popular story credits restaurant owner Fletcher Davis, of Athens, Texas, with the inspiration to place a ground beef patty between two pieces of bread. Davis made the dish a hit when he brought it to the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

From the early 1900s to the ‘30s, fast food franchises emerged and standardized the burger, making it a national phenomenon. But the era of prosperity after World War II would be what truly spread this classic beyond American shores.

Enduring Popularity

On-the-go restaurants may be responsible for the global food phenomenon that is the hamburger, but new ideas, recipes, and flavors are always being developed. Other popular variants include cheese, bacon, lamb, veggie, and shrimp burgers. No matter what your favorite is, the humble hamburger is a staple of American cuisine.
