You’re probably looking forward to a fun weekend celebrating with family and friends for the 4th of July, and here are a few simple tips to stay healthy and well while you do. It is important to continue following appropriate COVID-19 guidelines, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy your time with the people you love. If you have questions about COVID-19 testing give your provider a call.

How to Celebrate a Healthy 4th of July

1. Follow COVID-19 Safety Guidelines

As COVID-19 cases begin to drop across the islands, it’s important to continue following guidelines. Avoid large group gatherings, and continue to wear face masks, and wash hands frequently.

With large gatherings cancelled, look for virtual fireworks displays, enjoy time outdoors hiking or at the beach, and take time to slow down and spend quality time with the members of your household.

2. Stay Safe in the Sun

July is UV Safety month for good reason, and it’s even more important now. If you’re spending more time outside or on the water your ‘ohana while practicing social distancing during COVID-19, be sure to protect yourself from the sun.

Wear a good reef-safe sunscreen, and protective clothing like rash guards and sun hats. Don’t forget your eyes, a good pair of UV protective sunglasses will help to maintain your eye health in the tropical sun.

3. Practice Firework Safety

If you’re planning on celebrating with fireworks at home, prepare ahead to ensure that they’re handled safely. Did you know that even sparklers burn at a temperature that’s hot enough to melt glass?

Speak with keiki about safe distances and handling of fireworks, light fireworks a safe distance from any flammable brush or structures, and have plenty of water ready just in case. Keep an eye on children, and make sure that everyone is behaving responsibly.
