Granite headstones provide a wonderful way to remember a loved one, as no two slabs of the natural stone are alike. This allows you to create a unique memorial that you and your family can visit. Although granite is a durable material, it is also porous and subject to hard water deposits, lichens, mold, dirt, and dust. Below, learn tips for maintaining the headstone and therefore helping preserve the beloved individual’s memory.

3 Tips for Successful Granite Headstone Cleaning

1. Cleanse the Headstone With Water & Liquid Dish Detergent

Create a cleaning mixture using two liters of distilled water and a few drops of liquid dish detergent. Never use acidic products such as white vinegar, ammonia, or other harsh cleaners that can leave etches in the granite. Dip a clean rag in the soapy mixture and wring it out before wiping the headstone down.

2. Address Assorted Stains

If the headstone features water stains, for example, make a poultice that you will leave on for 24 hours out of one cup of baking soda and five tablespoons of liquid dish detergent. Add hydrogen peroxide to the mixture to create a thick paste and use masking tape to affix the poultice to the water stains.

Clean mold and mildew stains with a mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide and two parts water. Stir the mixture for five minutes before applying. You can also use a soft-bristled brush to remove mold, mildew, and rust.

3. Clean the Engravings Before Rinsing & Drying

Remove debris buildup from the headstone’s engravings with cotton balls dipped in soapy water. Rinse the entire granite slab with clean water. You may need to rinse it several times, depending on the type of stains it featured and how many cleaning products you needed to use. Dry the marker thoroughly with a dry, white cloth once you are certain it is free of all debris and stains. Make certain the marker is completely dry to avoid streaking. If you have to leave a poultice on for 24 hours, clean and dry around the affected area to avoid streaks.
