Performing a jump-start is the most common way to turn a vehicle back on after it’s experienced battery issues. Roadside assistance experts use jumper cables to attach the dead battery to a charged one, and then transfer the energy so the affected vehicle can start up again. If a jump-start doesn’t work, though, you’ll need tow services. They’ll get your car to a professional who can diagnose one of these issues that are affecting your vehicle.

Why a Jumpstart Doesn’t Work

1. Bad Jumper Cables

Inexpensive jumper cables can’t always carry a strong enough current from the charged battery to the dead one. This makes them ineffective at supplying the energy needed to fire up the engine. When purchasing jumper cables, look for ones that are thick and short, because they’re the most effective at transferring a current.

2. No Gasoline

Check the fuel gauge to ensure there is enough gasoline in the tank to ignite the engine. If the tank doesn’t have any fuel, a towing company can either bring you some or use their towing equipment to get you to a nearby gas station.

3. Faulty Battery Connections

JumpstartsOver time, the battery goes through normal wear and tear, which can cause the connection between your battery and the starter to malfunction. The constant rattling from driving might have jarred the bolts securing the battery and starter connection loose. Tightening them again can fix the issue. Corrosion is another issue that can disrupt a connection, so check the ports and clean the rust from the connector wires off if you find any.

4. Broken Alternator

The alternator charges the battery while the engine is running, so when it’s experiencing issues, the battery isn’t able to fire up the engine and will continually lose its charge. Signs of a failing alternator are dim dashboard lights, a battery shaped warning light on the dashboard, grinding or whining noises, and a burning smell. If you don’t replace the alternator, you’ll continue to have problems with the car dying.

5. Bad Starter

Starters are needed to transfer the power from the battery to the engine, and they’re known to breakdown unexpectedly. The biggest indicator that the vehicle is failing to jump because of a faulty starter is a clicking noise that occurs when you’re trying to fire up the engine. If that noise is heard, turn the key to accessor mode. If the radio and lights are still working, the starter needs to be replaced.
