Halitosis—or chronic bad breath—can be a cause of significant embarrassment for children. But it doesn’t have to cause lasting issues. When parents are aware of their child’s dental health needs and seek help from a dentist, they can mitigate the halitosis. The result is a happier child with better overall well-being.

What Causes Halitosis in Children?

dentistA lack of sound dental hygiene is the most common contributor to halitosis in children. Eating foods with a strong odor and then failing to brush and floss appropriately will lead to gum disease and tooth decay. This can result in lingering bad breath. Dehydration can also contribute to bad breath because saliva is needed to remove odor-causing germs from the mouth.

However, several underlying health conditions can result in halitosis. Upper respiratory infections, such as allergies or the common cold, as well as tonsillitis, will often cause children to develop halitosis. This is because these conditions cause them to breathe through their mouth, which reduces saliva.

When Should You See a Dentist?

Pay attention to your child’s other symptoms when they develop halitosis. Remember, if halitosis is the direct result of a cold, it will likely go away when the cold does. If your child complains of tooth pain, however, go to the dentist. If tonsillitis is to blame, other common symptoms include a swollen or sore throat, congestion, and trouble swallowing. In this case, it is better to visit a pediatrician who can prescribe antibiotics.
