A wonderful day on the water can change in an instant if someone goes overboard, especially if they aren’t wearing a life jacket. By following the right steps, you can recover the individual quickly and safely. Here’s what to do if a passenger falls from your vessel.

How to Respond if Someone Falls From a Boat

1. Alert Everyone & Throw Flotation Devices

Yell as loudly as you can to alert the other passengers. The captain should lower the sails, if applicable, or turn off the engine. Call for help if you’re near shore, or if there are other vessels nearby.

Throw life jackets and other flotation devices, such as a type IV throw cushion or ring buoy into the water to help the individual float and remain noticeable to other boaters and rescue crew members.

2. Make a Distress Call While Keeping the Victim in Sight

life jacketsPress the “man overboard” button on your VHF or GPS if you have one or call Channel 16 on your VHF marine radio. Keep the person within your line of sight or assign a fellow passenger to watch the person while you call for help. Don’t allow anyone to jump in after the victim since it can create additional safety issues.

3. Move the Boat Downwind

Navigate the boat toward the victim using the current or wind so that you don’t compromise the person’s safety. Throw another life jacket, throw bag, cushion or ring buoy connected to 50 feet of floating line. Once the person confirms they have a grip on the device, start pulling them in.

Anyone rescuing the victim should have a life vest on in case they get pulled overboard and are injured in the process. If possible, provide a ladder for the victim to climb up. Grab the person under their arms to pull them safely onto the boat.

4. Attend to the Victim

Get the victim out of wet clothes and cover with blankets if they’re experiencing hypothermia. Cover the person’s head since that’s where a large percentage of body heat escapes.

Also, look for injuries and signs of shock, such as rapid breathing, clammy hands, and chest pain. First Responders will provide the first aid treatment the individual needs.
