When you open a business, one of the first things you want to do is print business cards. Even if a significant portion of your business is done online, your business card is essential for networking and introducing your business to potential customers — and ensuring they can contact you when they need you. That’s a big job for a small piece of paper, so make the most of it by following these do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Remain consistent with your brand.

Your business card is often customers’ first introduction to your brand, so remain consistent by using the same colors, typeface, and design aesthetic used on the rest of your marketing materials. Include your company logo as well. The card design should reflect what customers can expect from your business, so choose the elements carefully.

Keep the design simple.

print business cardsWhen you print business cards, prioritize readability over creativity. Customers and contacts want to find your information easily, so choose an easy-to-read font in an appropriate size and avoid unnecessary or unrelated graphics. Stick with the traditional card size and shape, also. A larger or uniquely shaped card might stand out, but it can be challenging to store.

Don’t:

Include too much information.

The purpose of a business card is to give people the information they need to contact you. Don’t cram too much text on the card, such as business hours, taglines, and the services you provide. Ideally, the card should have your name and three ways to contact you (phone number, email address, and website.) If there’s space, include the physical address. Leave plenty of white space so the card is easy to read.

Forget to proofread.

Before you print business cards, go over them carefully to ensure there are no typos, grammatical errors, or other mistakes that will give customers the wrong impression of your business. Even a tiny mistake creates a perception of unprofessionalism, so take care and ask someone else to check your work before sending it to print.
