Whether you’re moving to a new apartment or packing up nonessentials for your storage unit, you need durable cardboard boxes. To ensure the boxes you use will be able to withstand reasonable wear and tear, follow these steps for assembling them.

4 Steps to Assembling Cardboard Boxes

1. Fold at the Creases

Locate the pre-marked creases, and use them as a guide to fold the box up and out into a 3-D square or rectangle. Then, flip it upside-down, and fold the four bottom flaps down toward the rest of the box so there are no gaps. Make sure the two flaps that are long enough to touch can cover the two shorter flaps, which will make taping much easier.

2. Seal the Bottom

Using packing tape, apply it to the bottom flaps so they close securely. If you are filling the box with lighter items, like linens, one strip of tape should be enough. If, on the other hand, you’ll be packing heavy belongings like books, reinforce the seal with a second layer of tape.

3. Fill the Box

Make sure not to overfill the box beyond its capacity, either, or it won’t be able to stack underneath other boxes while in storage.

4. Seal the Top

After you’ve filled the box, seal the flaps on top with more packing tape, and then immediately label the contents right away. Should you forget to label the box, or end up mislabeling it, unpacking it down the road will be a major headache.
