driveway is the perfect spot for recreation when you don’t want your little ones wandering too far. With a few simple activities, you can create fun memories with your family. This spring, spend quality time with your loved ones with these classic games.

A Family Guide to Driveway Activities for Children

1. Four Square

A popular game on the playground, four square can easily be brought home with some chalk and a ball.

Draw a large square and divide it into four even sections. Each player stands in their own square and takes turns bouncing the ball to other players. The ball must bounce once in their square before moving into the next person’s area, and if the receiving player fails to catch it, they’re out. If you have more than four people in the family, have extra players wait on the sidelines and replace whoever is eliminated.

2. Jump Rope

Jumping rope is another old-school activity that’s just as fun today. It’s also a type of exercise.

You and your children can hold contests to see who can jump for the longest period or do the coolest tricks, or use a long rope for group games. Chant classic rhymes, sing songs, or make up your own creative challenges.

3. Basketball

drivewaysBasketball hoops elevate a family driveway, so install one to make use of it this spring. Play one-on-one, split into teams, or switch it up with a few rounds of H-O-R-S-E and Around the World.

If you don’t have a hoop, make it a group project and craft a makeshift one out of materials you have at home. You can use cardboard for the backboard, a wire hanger for the rim, and string for the net.

4. Red Light, Green Light

This game is fun for all ages and keeps everyone on their toes.

Elect one family member to stand at the end of the driveway, facing away from everybody else. When the selected individual calls out “green light,” everyone moves toward them. When they say “red light” and turn around, everyone should freeze. Anyone caught moving is out.

5. Hopscotch

Break out the chalk and draw a hopscotch board on the pavement for hours of fun.

Hopscotch is a versatile activity, and there are many games you can play with it. For young children, these activities are also helpful for practicing numbers, counting, and balance.
