Wearing dentures can restore your confidence and improve your smile. If you wear them, it’s important to maintain them properly so that they remain in great condition for years. Dentists offer a variety of tips to keep them clean and stain-free. Here’s what you should know.

How to Care for Your Dentures

1. Rinse Them Regularly

You can safely wear dentures while you’re eating and drinking. It’s crucial, however, to rinse them thoroughly after you’re done to prevent the surface from developing unsightly stains. Rinsing also washes away small particles that might otherwise stick to the surface.

2. Clean Your Mouth

dentistDentists suggest cleaning your mouth when you remove the dentures. This is wise because it will eliminate any food particles and bacteria that may linger in your mouth after your meal.

Be sure to use a brush with soft bristles so you don’t irritate the gums or natural teeth. Smooth it around your mouth gently, including your tongue and cheeks, and be sure there’s no adhesive left on your gums.

3. Brush the Dentures

Just like you would brush your teeth every single day, you should also do the same with your dentures on a daily basis. This is key to helping them retain their clean appearance and limiting the likelihood of stain formation.

To do that, use a soft brush to gently go over them. Apply an approved denture cleaning product, such as one recommended by your dentist, to eliminate all traces of plaque, particles, and adhesives.

4. Soak Them Overnight

Don’t wear them overnight. This will allow bacteria to multiply. Instead, soak them in a denture-approved solution. Dampening them helps them retain their structure.

When it’s time to put your dentures back in your mouth, clean them thoroughly beforehand. The solution may have a strong and uncomfortable taste, so rinse them in lukewarm water.
