If you're among the many individuals who struggle to conceive naturally, assisted reproductive technology can help. Among the most common procedures are in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI). Both are safe and effective, though one may be more suitable for you, depending on your infertility challenges. Learn more about each procedure in the guide below.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization is one of the most common and successful infertility treatments available. With IVF, medications are used to stimulate and mature multiple eggs in one cycle. Once mature, the eggs are removed from your body and taken to a lab, where they’re fertilized with sperm.

Successfully fertilized eggs are then surgically inserted into your uterus. Pregnancy occurs when any of the embryos implants in the lining of your uterus.

in vitroOne of the main risks associated with IVF is multiple births, which occurs when more than one of the fertilized eggs implants in the uterus, leading to multiple fetuses. In the United States, the live birth rate for women using IVF under the age of 35 is 41–43%. The success rate of IVF may decrease, depending on factors such as lifestyle, overall health, and age.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Unlike IVF, IUI is a relatively simple treatment that can be performed with or without fertility medications. The procedure involves transferring clean semen directly into the uterus using a catheter, simulating natural conception.

IUI may be recommended for individuals trying to conceive through a sperm donation program, couples trying to overcome male infertility issues, or those with hostile cervical mucus.

While IUI is considered a low-risk procedure, like IVF, there is the possibility of conceiving multiples when paired with fertility medications.

Though the success of IUI varies widely depending on your age and cause of infertility, the live birth rate is comparatively low—at best, 15%.
