The warm, dynamic sounds of vinyl are why many people prefer listening to records instead of digital formats. To enjoy your collection, you’ll need a reliable turntable. To learn more about how to maintain a record player, follow the advice in this helpful guide.

3 Upkeep Tips For Turntables

1. Keep the Stylus Clean

A dirty stylus could be to blame for hissing sounds and skipping when you play vinyl records. This happens when dirt and other airborne particles stick to the needle. To prevent surface noises or potential record damage, regularly clean the stylus.

turntableAvoid liquid cleaners, as the solutions can dissolve the adhesive securing the stylus to the cantilever. Instead, use a carbon fiber stylus brush to remove residue. Gently rub it over the stylus from back to front, following the direction the record moves on the turntable. In addition to particles, the brush will remove the static charge that can also distort sound.

2. Inspect the Belt

The belt connects the turntable to a motor. Without it, the turntable wouldn’t spin at a consistent speed. The belt can wear down over time, causing it to slip more often. This will slow down the platter speed, causing pitch problems that compromise sound quality. Routinely check to see if the belt is falling from the pulley. If so, it’s time for a replacement.

3. Recalibrate the Tonearm

The tonearm helps the cartridge maintain the proper position while moving over the record. If the tonearm isn’t calibrated correctly, the audio signal could be affected. To recalibrate the tonearm, remove the needle cover and free the arm clamp. Rotate the counterweight until the proper balance is restored.
