Electronic items like flat-screen televisions, laptops, tablets, and game consoles are fragile and require special handling when moving. Use these packing tips to protect your electronics when you’re preparing for your next move.

How to Protect Your Electronics During a Move

1. Use the Right Packing Materials

The best way to protect your high-tech devices is by using the original packaging. These boxes usually contain custom-cut foam pieces to secure the electronics during transport.

If you don’t have the original packaging, you can request sturdy cardboard boxes in a variety of shapes from your moving company.

2. Keep All Accessories Together

Whether you’re packing a home theater system or computer, keep all connecting items together. For example, put loose cords, remote controls, and wires in sealable bags and tape them to larger items, such as Blu-ray players. Pad the main components with foam, bubble wrap, or towels before placing them in an appropriate-sized box or container.

3. Label Everything

Once your electronics and their accessories are in the box and securely wrapped with packaging tape, label the container with its contents and note “Fragile” in large print. Your moving party will then know to handle it with care.

4. Back Up Important Files

If you’re packing a computer, tablet, or other computing device, use an external hard drive or USB drive to back up its files. You’ll be glad to have a copy of the data in case the original device is damaged during your move.
